Why a coverage heatmap rather than a study timer?

Because time spent is a vanity metric. The failure mode in long syllabi is repeatedly revising comfortable topics while avoiding weak ones — and a heatmap makes that impossible to ignore.

What are progressive notes?

Notes that accumulate across passes rather than being rewritten each time. It matches how long-horizon revision actually works: you meet a topic several times and each pass adds depth.
